Ypres Trip 2016
This year 54 year 9 pupils and 5 staff went on our annual trip to Ypres and the Somme Battlefields. This was made even more special this year by the fact that it coincided with the 100-year anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
At Lochnagar Crater there was a troop transport lorry from the Transport Museum in Acton that was over 100 years old.
We also visited Fricourt German cemetery and the head of the German War Graves commission gave us all some booklets about the Somme and some Forget Me Nots badges and crosses. We placed one of these Forget me nots on our wreath that we laid at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
In the last Post ceremony, the Canadian minister for veteran affairs was present alongside several representatives of the Ulster Regiments prior to their July 1st ceremony at Ulster Tower. This was an extended ceremony with prayers, a reading and the playing of a pipe and a bugle. Our representatives did extremely well in the laying of the wreath.
The highlight of the trip for the pupils was probably the visit to the Belgian Chocolate shop!
